Remembering What Made Us

I don't have much of a memory to speak of. When people tell me about their childhoods - the good and the bad - I listen in amazement. I am amazed that they have any recollection of it at all. My own childhood centers around a few moments here and there. For example, when I was, maybe, five years old. I was playing a game with the dog outside, calling to her through the kitchen window while she raced around the house to find the source of my voice. We were living in California at the time, in a ... continue reading...

Need Help Understanding the Rosary?

Catholic handbook for the Rosary

October is very nearly upon us so brace yourselves for everything Rosary. My blog is no exception. Why October? Because the Church dedicates the month to the Holy Rosary. This year, especially, you should note all the Rosaries! 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of Our Lady's apparition at Fatima. God Will Show Up Big Time

"Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made." The back of the house has a room that is comprised of nearly all windows and each one of them provides a stellar view of the small, man-made "mud pit," as some local residents like to call it. In the heat of the day, this room can be rather suffocating, as the windows ... continue reading...

Metamorphosis

Way back in 2005 I read on a listserv somewhere, most likely via a dial up connection, about something called a blog. I immediately signed up on blogger, posted a picture of my dog, and then called my friend to inform her of my escapade. I put something on the internet! She could see it, too! "So?" she asked me. "What are you supposed to do with this?" "Anything!" was my excited reply. And I meant it. But I didn't do anything. I did everything. I deleted that image and that blog and then ... continue reading...

Mine is the Search

I'm a huge fan of Flannery O'Connor.  I read and re-read her short stories, letters, and spiritual diary. The truth is, I find in her something I want and want deeply. Her Catholicism. Yes, I am Catholic. But I'm not a Flannery O'Connor Catholic. I don't know that my first reaction to a banal observation of the Eucharist as a symbol would result in a "very shaky voice" exclaiming, "well, if it's a symbol, to Hell with it!" In fact, I know this isn't what my reaction would be. I came into the ... continue reading...
