Book Review: Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett

Summary

Sam and Dave decide to dig. They’re going to set out and dig and dig and dig until they find something spectacular. But just how far can two little boys dig?

Review

I borrowed this book for the title. Seriously, I have a struggling reader and the title looked like it would have easy enough words for said boy to follow along with.

Plus.

Digging!

Hello dirt! Hello Fun!

The illustrations are fantastic. I love that they are understated. They compliment perfectly the understated storyline. That is, the boys are digging to find something, and switch directions just when they are most likely to find it! I do so enjoy a good ironic plot.

So we like the book. Until the end. We just didn’t get it. I have no idea what happened.

Was it imaginary? And were the boys just pretending to dig?But then, why the different locale at the end of the book?

Did they “dig their way to China?” But then, why the fall? Wouldn’t they then climb out onto land?

And so it was disappointing to us, this book that started out so well. Truthfully, my head hurts trying to resolve the story. People, I take my books seriously! Even picture books! Especially picture books!
